Summer Moving Tips to Keep You Cool and Organized

If you’re like most people, you want to get moved in as quickly as possible so you can start enjoying your new home. However, if you’re not careful, moving during the summer can be a disaster. Heat exhaustion, broken furniture, and missed deadlines are just a few of the potential problems. Read on for our summer moving tips that will help you stay cool, calm, and collected throughout the process of your relocation.

Summer Moving Tips

Summer moving tips:

Summertime moves come with their own set of challenges. From keeping your cool during the hot weather to staying organized while packing, there are a few things you should keep in mind to make sure your move goes smoothly.

Here are a few dos and don’ts to help you out:

DO:

-Start packing early: The sooner you start packing, the better. This will give you plenty of time to sort through your belongings and get rid of anything you don’t need or want.

-Create a packing schedule: A packing schedule will help you stay on track and ensure that you don’t forget anything.

– Take breaks often. Drink lots of water and take breaks in the shade as often as possible.

– Be careful with your furniture. Don’t try to move too much at once. And be careful not to damage your furniture in the heat.

– Have a plan. Make sure you know what you’re doing before you start. That way, you won’t get too frazzled in the heat.

-Pack essentials in a separate bag: Pack a bag with everything you’ll need for the first few days in your new home, including clothes, toiletries, and medications.

-Label all of your boxes: Labeling your boxes will make unpacking a breeze. Be sure to include a list of contents in each box so you know what’s inside.

-Pack heavy items in small boxes: Smaller boxes are easier to carry and won’t strain your back.

-Make a plan for your pets: If you’re moving with pets, be sure to make arrangements for them in advance. This may include finding a pet-friendly hotel or making arrangements with a friend or family member to care for them during the move.

DON’T:

-Wait until the last minute to pack: Packing at the last minute will only add to the stress of moving.

-Pack without a plan: Without a packing plan, you’re likely to forget something important or end up with too many boxes.

-Pack fragile items in large boxes: Large boxes are more difficult to carry and are more likely to break.

-Forget about your pets: Pets can be easily forgotten in the midst of a move. Be sure to make arrangements for them well in advance.

-Try to do it all yourself: Moving is a lot of work. Don’t be afraid to ask for help from family and friends.

Dress appropriately for a summer move

Summer Moving Tips in Texas

Avoid dark clothing. Wearing black or another dark color will only make you feel hotter since darker colors absorb more heat from the sun’s rays. If you must wear a darker shade, try to stick to light-colored fabrics that won’t hold as much heat against your skin.

Second, dress in layers. Even if it’s hot outside, you can still get chilled from the air conditioning in the truck or from being in and out of the house all day. Wearing layers will give you the option to remove a piece of clothing if you start to feel too warm.

Thirdly, protect your skin. Wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. If you’ll be working outside for most of the move, consider wearing a hat or visor to keep the sun out of your eyes and off your face.

Finally, don’t forget about your feet. Wearing the wrong shoes can ruin your whole day. Avoid flip-flops, high heels, or any other shoe that doesn’t offer good support or breathability. Stick to sneakers or closed-toe shoes made of light fabric such as canvas. And if you can, bring an extra pair of socks in case your feet start to sweat.

Pro tip: Avoid synthetic materials, such as rayon and polyester. Also, keep to light-colored attire when packing for relocation. When it comes to staying cool in the scorching sun, whites and neutrals are the keys.

Connect utilities before move-in day

Summer moving connect utilities

Turning on the power and water at your new home before you move in is crucial. You’ll want to make sure that everything is working properly so that you’re not without air conditioning or hot water during the summer months. Contact your utility companies a few weeks in advance to schedule a time for them to turn on your service.

It’s also a good idea to do a walk-through of your new home with the previous owner or property manager. This way, you can familiarize yourself with how everything works and identify any potential problems that need to be fixed before you move in.

Protect items from heat damage

Be aware that not all products can endure the heat. When packing up your things, keep in mind that not everything can sit in a hot moving truck for hours. Some of your items (anything that can melt) will not survive the summer heat. So, be sure to pack these things (i.e., electronics) separately and get them inside the air-conditioned house right away.

How to Choose the Right Moving Company for You

When it’s time to move, you have a lot of important decisions to make. One of the most important is deciding which moving company to hire. There are many factors to consider when making this decision, such as price, services offered, and reputation. In this blog post, we will discuss what you should look for when hiring a moving company so that you can make an informed decision and find the right one for your needs With a little research, you can make your move stress-free and hassle-free.

  • Their licensing and insurance: Make sure the company is licensed and insured in case anything goes wrong during the move.
  • Their availability: Can they do the move on the date you need? Do they have any flexibility if your plans change?
  • The company’s reputation: Do they have good reviews? Are they accredited by the Better Business Bureau?

Price

There are a few key things to look for when hiring a moving company. The first is price. You need to get an estimate from each company you are considering so that you can compare prices and decide which one is the most affordable for your budget. Keep in mind, however, that the lowest price may not always be the best option.  In some cases, it may be worth paying a little more for a company that offers better services or has a better reputation.

Factors that affect moving costs: travel fees, size of your move, storage fees, packing/unpacking services, moving add-ons, moving supplies, the time needed for the move and schedule date, liability and insurance coverage, stairs, anticipated transportation difficulties, length and distance of your move.

Service

The second thing to look for is the services offered. Make sure the company you choose offers the services you need, such as packing, unpacking, and storage. Some companies also offer additional services such as cleaning and pet care.  Choose a company that offers the services you need so that you can make your move as stress-free as possible.

Not all moving companies offer the same services, so it’s important to choose one that best suits your needs. If you’re not sure what services you need, here’s a rundown of some of the most common ones offered by moving companies:

Supplying all packing materials and supplies: This is a great option if you don’t have the time or energy to go out and buy your own packing materials. The company will usually provide boxes, tape, bubble wrap, and other materials you’ll need to safely pack up your belongings.

Packing up your belongings: This is the most common service offered by moving companies. They’ll send a team of professional packers to your home to carefully pack up all of your belongings. They’ll label everything and load it onto the truck so you don’t have to lift a finger.

Furniture disassembly: If you have large pieces of furniture that need to be disassembled for moving, most companies will offer this service. They’ll take care of disassembling and reassembling your furniture so you don’t have to worry about it.

Truck loading and unloading: This is another service that most companies offer. They’ll load up the truck with all of your belongings and then unload it at your new home. You won’t have to lift a finger – just sit back and relax.

Transporting your belongings: This is the most important service offered by moving companies. They’ll transport your belongings from your old home to your new one. You can rest assured that your belongings will arrive safe and sound.

Unpacking: If you don’t want to deal with unpacking all of your boxes when you get to your new home, most companies offer an unpacking service. They’ll unpack all of your boxes and put everything away for you.

Disposal of packing materials: Once everything is unpacked, the last thing you want to deal with is getting rid of all the packing materials. Most companies will dispose of them for you so you don’t have to worry about it.

Estimate and planning time: The estimate and planning time is the amount of time it will take for the company to come up with a plan for your move. This includes assessing your belongings, determining the best way to transport them, and giving you an estimate of the cost. Once the estimate and planning time is complete, you can sit back and relax knowing that your move is in good hands.

Now that you know what services are offered by moving companies, you can start looking for one that best suits your needs. Keep these services in mind when you’re making your decision so you can be sure to choose the right company for you.

Reputation

The third thing to consider is the company’s reputation. You can read online reviews or ask family and friends for recommendations. Once you have a few companies in mind, do some research to make sure they are reliable and have a good reputation. You can also check with the Better Business Bureau to see if there have been any complaints filed against the companies you are considering.

The Ultimate Moving Checklist: What to do Before, During, and After Your Move

Are you in the process of planning a move? If so, you will want to check out this helpful article on the ultimate moving checklist. This guide will walk you through everything you need to do before, during, and after your move to ensure a smooth transition into your new home. By following these tips, you can avoid common moving mistakes and make the process as stress-free as possible!

Moving Checklist Timeline:

60 Days Before the Move:

– Start packing! Begin by sorting through your belongings and dividing them into three categories: keep, donate, or toss. Tackle one category at a time and pack up everything that belongs in that group. Be sure to use proper packing supplies to protect your items during transport.

– Create a moving budget. Moving can be expensive, so it’s important to create a budget and stick to it. Decide what expenses are necessary (such as hiring movers, buying packing supplies, etc.) and which ones you can cut back on.

– Make an Inventory List. This is especially important if you’re hiring movers. Make a list of all the items you plan to move and give it to your movers so they can create an estimate.

30 Days Before the Move:

Change your address a month before you move. This will ensure that all of your mail is delivered to your new address and that you don’t miss any important updates or notifications.

– Contact your utility companies and schedule a time for them to switch over your service to your new home. Make sure to have all of your account information and contact info handy so that the process goes as smoothly as possible.

– Pack any items you don’t need in the next few weeks ahead of time. This will help to minimize the amount of work you have to do during the move itself.

14 Days Before the Move:

– Label all of your boxes clearly so that you can easily find what you are looking for once everything is unpacked.

– Notify your bank, credit card companies, insurance providers, and other service providers of your move.

– Clean your old home and get it ready to sell. This may include painting, deep cleaning, or repairs.

– Make sure to pack an essentials bag with all of the items you will need during and after the move. This should include things like your toiletry kit, change of clothes, important documents, and medications.

It’s Moving Day!

– Now is the time to pack your last-minute items. No matter how closely you followed our moving checklist and packing tips earlier, there will still be at least a few things that can’t wait until moving day!

– If you disassemble anything, make sure you gather all pieces and store them with a label so you don’t end up with missing pieces during the reassembly.

– When you are moving, it is important to take care of your most valuable possessions. Make sure that any fragile or expensive items are securely wrapped and protected from getting damaged during the process so they arrive at their new home in pristine condition!

– Make sure to label all boxes appropriately and group them in a way that will make sense for when you arrive at your new home. This makes unloading much easier as well!

– Before you load up the truck, make sure that every nook and cranny in your home has been checked for forgotten items. You don’t want to leave any surprises by forgetting something important in drawers or having items hidden inside furniture! (This makes things a bit heavier if they are not unloaded before transport.)

– Bad weather happens. If the forecast shows inclement weather be prepared and be flexible. Some moves end up taking longer than expected, don’t worry and breathe – have something ready in case you get bored or hungry while waiting for things to clear up.

If you Plan on Hiring Professional Movers

Before the movers arrive, dispose of any trash you’ve accumulated through packing and sorting. This will free up space for our movers, so they can do their job easily!

Movers know how to move homes and will do so with professionalism and safety practices in mind. You shouldn’t try helping out unless specifically asked. Interference could pose a liability for them if anything were damaged or broken while moving your belongings.

– The best way to prevent damage during moving is by hiring professionals who will take care of all the heavy lifting for you. They are experts in disassembling furniture and reassembling it correctly, so there’s no need for fretting about putting things back together yourself.

– Treating the movers well can be a nice way to show appreciation for their hard work. Offer them plenty of water, and if you have any food in your fridge or freezer that might interest them then by all means share! A nice gesture goes a long way!

After the Move:

– Make sure to unpack everything as soon as possible so that you can start settling into your new home.

– Take a few days to relax and recover from the move. This is especially important if you have kids or pets, who may be extra active and restless after the move.

Connect with your new neighbors and get to know your new community. This is a great way to make sure that you feel comfortable and settled in your new home.

– Get organized! One of the best things about moving is that it’s the perfect time to declutter your old home and organize your new one. Spend some time sorting through your belongings and deciding what needs to go into storage and what can be donated or thrown away. Having a well-organized home will make living in it that much more enjoyable!

Choose the Right Moving Company

Now that you have the ultimate moving checklist, it’s time to choose the right moving company. Your property is important and should be handled with care. By choosing a reputable mover, you can relax knowing your belongings are in good hands. We hope this article has helped make your move less stressful and more organized. How to Avoid Common Moving Mistakes: Tips from the Pros

If you’re moving soon, you no doubt have a lot on your mind. There are so many things to do in order to get ready for the big day! But one thing you don’t want to worry about is making mistakes. That’s why we’ve enlisted the help of our professional movers to give us their top tips on how to avoid common moving mistakes. Keep reading for advice from the experts on everything from packing and planning to stay organized during your move.

Common Mistakes to Avoid when Moving

–  Spending too much on packing. Packing can be a costly endeavor, but it doesn’t have to be. Avoid overspending on boxes and packing materials by shopping around for the best deals. You can also find free or cheap boxes at local businesses and online classifieds websites like Craigslist.

–  Packing heavy items in large boxes. It’s important to pack heavy items in small boxes so they’re easier to carry. This will also help keep the weight of your boxes manageable.

–  Forgetting to change your address. One of the most important things you need to do when moving is updating your address with all of your important contacts. This includes your bank, insurance company, employer, etc. Failing to do so could lead to missed bills, packages, or important mail.

–  Packing flammable, explosive or corrosive materials. It’s important to avoid packing any hazardous materials in your moving boxes. These can be dangerous not just for you but for the movers as well. So if you have any flammable, explosive or corrosive materials, be sure to pack them separately.

–  Leaving outside of boxes blank. When packing your boxes, it’s important to label them clearly so you know what’s inside. This way, you won’t have to open every single one when you get to your new home.

–  Forgetting to take measurements. Before you start packing, take some time to measure the dimensions of your new home and compare them to the size of your current furniture. This way, you’ll have a good idea of what will fit and what needs to be packed.

–  Taking taxes too lightly. Moving can be expensive, so it’s important to budget for all the associated costs, including taxes. You may be able to deduct some of your moving expenses on your tax return, so be sure to speak with an accountant beforehand.

–  Another common mistake is trying to do it all yourself. Moving is hard work, so don’t try to take it on alone! Ask friends and family for help or hire professionals.

Tips from the Pros:

–  Moving during the summer months can be very hectic and busy. Nearly half of all moves occur between Memorial Day and Labor Day!

–  It is recommended that you make your reservation two to four weeks ahead of time for your truck or trailer. This helps to secure the type of vehicle you’ll need – for local moves or one-way rentals.

–  Keep in mind that the rental rates are cheaper for trucks during these non-peak weekdays if you move between Monday and Thursday. Typically, the rental centers are busier on the weekends.

–  Disrespecting your movers. Moving is hard work, and your movers deserve respect for all they’re doing to help you. So be sure to thank them for their efforts, and don’t forget to offer them a meal or drink during your break.

Moving can be a stressful experience, but by following these tips from the pros, you can avoid making common mistakes and make your move go as smoothly as possible. Good luck!

How to Move: The Ultimate Guide to Moving Boxes and Supplies

Planning a move? Whether it’s across town or across the country, you’ll need to pack up your belongings and transport them to your new home. The process can be daunting, but don’t worry – we’re here to help! In this guide, we’ll discuss everything you need to know about moving boxes and supplies. We’ll also provide tips for packing and transporting your belongings safely and efficiently. Let’s get started!

First, you’ll need to decide what type of moving boxes to use. There are a variety of options available, including standard cardboard boxes, plastic crates, and reusable moving containers. Which type of box is best for you will depend on your needs and budget.

What Types of Moving Boxes Are There?

There are several different types and sizes of moving boxes available on the market, and each has its own set of benefits and drawbacks. The most common types of moving boxes and containers are:

– Cardboard Boxes (S, M, L, XL, Corrugated)

Cardboard boxes are the most popular type of moving box because they’re lightweight and easy to store. They’re also relatively cheap and can be recycled or reused after your move. However, cardboard is prone to damage if it gets wet or is stacked too high.

– Plastic Bins

Plastic bins are a good option for fragile items, as they offer extra protection from bumps and falls. They’re also waterproof and can be easily cleaned if necessary. However, plastic bins can be heavy and take up a lot of space, so they’re not ideal for large items.

– U-BOX Containers

U-Box containers are a great option for anyone who wants flexibility during their upcoming move. With U-Box containers, you have the option to pack and store your belongings at your own pace, which is perfect for anyone who isn’t sure where they’ll end up. Plus, U-Box containers are a great way to save money on your move, since you only pay for the amount of space you use. For more information about U-Box containers, visit https://www.uhaul.com/UBox/.

Moving Box Sizes

When choosing moving boxes, it’s important to consider the size and weight of the items you plan to pack. Boxes that are too small or too large will be difficult to handle and may end up getting damaged during transit.

Here are some general guidelines for choosing the right box size:

Small boxes: ideal for lightweight items such as clothes, linens, and books

Medium boxes: ideal for heavier items such as pots and pans, toys, and canned food

Large and XL boxes: ideal for a variety of items, including furniture pieces

Wardrobe boxes: Wardrobe boxes provide an excellent way for packing and storing clothes while moving, wardrobes are typically large enough to hold hanging clothes as well as loose linens or blankets for storage purposes during your move.

Picture boxes: Picture boxes are perfect for transporting your artwork, framed family portraits, and kids’ posters. They come in two different sizes so you can easily fit almost any picture or mirror into them!

China boxes: China boxes are sturdy, thick paper sleeves that protect your valuable china from damage. These types of packaging were originally designed for transporting delicate items like crystal, and dishes, but can be used in any situation where you want the most protection possible.

Protect your Mattress!

During the process of moving your mattress just may be one of the most personal items you move. Therefore, it is essential you take steps to make sure it is protected during the move.

First, you want to make sure to remove all the bedding including fitted sheets and/or any mattress toppers this will make it easier to grip the mattress for moving.

Also, make sure to purchase a mattress cover also referred to as a mattress bag and not a mattress protector. Mattress protectors will guard the surface you sleep on, while mattress covers help protect the soft exterior of your mattress during transport. You really do not want to lay your head down on a mattress that has touched trucks, floors, and dusty surfaces, it’s inevitable that your mattress will be exposed to these elements so be sure to keep your mattress clean and safe.

How Many Boxes Do I Need?

Starting small is the best way to start your move. We recommend ordering 15 small boxes, 15 medium-sized moving boxes, and 10 large ones for heavier items like small appliances or furniture pieces that won’t fit into other types of containers easily.

The amount of moving boxes you need will depend on the size and weight of your items to be packed, but on average most single-family homes require between 100 – 150 individual packing containers per move. For example, if most of the items in your home are smaller than 30 lbs then it would take approximately 100 – 150 moving box sizes total (including those that can handle heavy objects). However, some families may require more or fewer due primarily to size, weight, and the number of items to be transported.

15 small boxes

15 medium boxes

10 large boxes

3 rolls of tape

2 packs of paper

Buying Moving Boxes

Hardware or Retail Stores: Be sure to check the thickness and quality of the boxes when purchasing. Avoid buying boxes you don’t need, some pre-packaged packs with over-sell you, and you are left needing different size boxes and no use for some boxes at all.

Online: Buying boxes online is a thing, but do you really know what you are getting? Make sure you trust the source of your moving boxes.

Moving Company: Purchasing boxes through a moving company is the easiest and most efficient way to obtain boxes for your move. Moving companies have custom labels on the side of their boxes so that you can easily identify the boxes when packing and unpacking. Boxes can be delivered to your home so you have one less thing to do during the moving process.* We offer full-service packing and unpacking!*

Moving Supplies

In addition to moving boxes, you’ll also need supplies for packing your belongings. Here are some of the most essential packing supplies:

– Tape

Tape is an essential item for packing your boxes. It can be used to secure the lid of the box and to keep bubble wrap in place.

– Bubble wrap

Bubble wrap is great for protecting small or fragile items during transport. It’s also easy to use and can be folded up when not in use. However, bubble wrap is not very sturdy and can easily get damaged if mishandled.

– Packing peanuts or newspaper

Packing peanuts or newspapers can be used to fill up empty spaces in boxes and prevent objects from moving around during transit.

– Markers

Markers and labels can be used to identify which boxes contain fragile items.

– Labels

Labels are best used when labeling plastic bins and other reusable containers. Identifying fragile boxes with a label will help others know to be a little more gentle when transporting those boxes.

– Scissors

Using scissors will help you quickly cut through the tape, so to speak, and allow you to make easy strips without the hassle of trying to “tear” a piece off. Once you’re ready to unpack you may need those scissors again to open those boxes in your new home!

It’s Time to Move!

Once your boxes are packed and ready to go, it’s time to start moving! Here are a few tips for transporting your belongings safely and efficiently:

– Plan ahead and map out a route for your move. This will help you avoid traffic jams and other potential delays.

– If possible, try to schedule your move during the off-peak hours (e.g. early morning or late evening).

– Use moving straps or ropes to secure large furniture pieces to the floor of the moving truck.

– Pack all of your boxes in the truck in an orderly fashion so they can be easily accessed during transport.

– Make sure that you have plenty of moving blankets to protect your furniture from scratches and other damage.

Follow these tips and you’ll be on your way to a smooth and stress-free move! Good luck!

5 Essential Items To Make Moving Easier

Is this your first time moving? How much do you know about moving? Moving can be a new and exciting experience for some and a terrifying journey for others. Being prepared with the necessary tools and equipment is one of the best ways to make moving easier. We understand just how important it is to have all your ducks in a row when faced with such a big challenge. Here are a few essential items that will make moving easier:

Boxes

This is probably the most important of all the essential items. We recommend that you use sturdier built boxes for the best move. The last thing you want to worry about is the bottom of your box breaking and having to do a cleanup in the middle of it all. We also suggest that when looking for boxes, purchase a variety of sizes. (For a limited time Moving By Design will provide 10 FREE boxes with every move!)

Bubble Wrap

Accidents happen, we know. It’s best to expect the unexpected when it comes to moving and invest in a little more security for your items. Bubble wrap is relatively inexpensive and if you have kids, they can entertain themselves with it when you’re finished using it.

Cloth Wraps

These are great for large pieces of furniture or large delicates (such as your tv). These aren’t necessary to purchase if using a moving company. If you are moving by yourself, you can find them on amazon. If you are looking for a cheaper alternative to this, use a comforter or two. Depending on what you are moving, purchasing a cloth wrap may not be necessary.

Dollies

Dollies are very useful for any type of move. Anyone who has ever suffered a back injury while moving heavy objects knows what an essential item this is. Whether by yourself, with a friend, or being used by a moving company, dollies help in avoiding injury that may be caused by handling large and heavy objects. Investing in a dolly is something you should definitely consider if you plan on personally moving the objects for several moves from this point on. Otherwise, a dolly will be provided by your moving company.

Heavy-Duty Garbage Bags

Garbage bags aren’t just putting trash in. Aside from just being the obvious receptacle for the things you’re ready to toss, you can also use garbage bags to move clothes, linens, soft toys, and other non-breakables, as well as to protect various items on moving day. Use heavy-duty bags. Thick, black garbage bags work best since they can carry significantly more weight than their flimsy counterparts with less chance of tearing or breaking.

5 Quick Packing And Moving Tips To Make Moving Easier

Packing and moving can be both a pain and a blessing. It’s a blessing to be starting a new adventure, but it’s a pain having to evaluate all the stuff you’ve accumulated over time and deciding what should go with you. Moving can be a real mess when you think of everything involved – the planning, the packing, and the time it takes to make it all happen. This might be one of the reasons why people are afraid of change. Not because of the change itself or the place you’re going, rather it’s the packing and moving itself people dread. The sheer amount of work it takes to actually make it all come together.

5 Quick Packing And Moving Tips To Make Moving Easier

That’s why you hire a moving company. While we can’t do everything for you in the process of moving, we can do a lot, including full-service packing and unpacking. Many people are not even aware that some moving companies offer a packing and unpacking service.

If you are planning to do the packing yourself, here are 5 quick packing and moving tips to make your move go a little smoother.

1. Purge Those Closets!

Go through your closet and decide what you want to keep or give away. This is the easiest way to begin mentally preparing yourself for the move. After you have gone through your closet, go through your children’s closets (if you have any) and help them decide what they want to keep or get rid of. Next, go through any coat closets or other additional closets.

2. Declutter Your Space

Take all your knickknacks and tchotchkes and begin packing them away. Clear off tables and surfaces until just the furniture itself is left.

3. Start Small

A good idea is to start a few weeks before the big move with the items you know you won’t be using anytime soon. Photo albums, movies, or your children’s trophies. This will help everyone recognize what is happening without wreaking havoc and causing panic.

4. Pack Strategically

One of our favorite moving tips is always looking for unique and efficient ways to pack things. Use your pots and pans to pack the smaller items. Get creative with what containers you can use to pack your items. Think outside the box! You can also take a clothes hamper and fill it with blankets and place wrapped breakables inside.

5. Hold A Garage Sale

This is the place where you should try to get rid of those clothes and items you found in your closet that you no longer need. This is also an opportunity to get rid of some unnecessary knickknacks. Whatever money you make from a garage or yard sale can be used to offset moving expenses.

How To Find The Right Neighborhood

Finding the right neighborhood can be quite a challenge. There are several factors that play into scoping out the perfect place. Here is a checklist, in no particular order, for finding the right home for you and your family.

1. Research the School Districts – This is probably one of the first things that should be done if you are moving and have children. Finding the best school rating and maybe your homes’ distance to the school will be helpful in regards to bus routes or commute times if you plan on driving the children yourself. Something to consider is that the closer you are to the school, the higher the likelihood of there being more children in the neighborhood! Which is always good for children who have just moved.

2. Consider public transit/railroads – Another important task is to look up just how busy your cross streets are. Do they have bus stops? Do they have traffic lights? Or is the neighborhood mostly filled with stop signs? It is also good to note the train in your area. Does it go near your home? While this may lower the overall price of your home, as it can be quite noisy, and although easy to adjust to, it may be unsettling noise if you work from home. If you are considering a home in the area of a nearby train, try to find out the general times of the train and when it may pass through your neighborhood. Depending on the area, the train may be designated to sound its horn, but usually, when going through a residential area it is quiet.

3. Property taxes – Always an important part of the home buying process is to see what your property is being taxed for. Property taxes are extremely important because it is a big chunk of money every year. So while you are paying for the price of your home, don’t forget to include the tax!

4. Amenities – What is in the area of your intended home? A golf course? A shopping center? A grocery store? A park for your kids? All of these are important aspects to consider when you are looking for the perfect home. How active is your family? Does it matter to you if you are close to a bike trail? Think of the hobbies you would like your family to participate in and incorporate those into your search. The more amenities, the more desirable the property.

5. Crime Rates – Something we never want to worry about is the safety of our home and children. That is why it is imperative that you research the crime rates in the area to which you are moving. Generally, crime is unavoidable, but having a good police department can help with that. Be sure to check on the crime rate as soon as you start looking at a town or city.

How To Pack Your Garage For Moving

Most people put off packing their garage until the last minute. After all, who wants to deal with the large, difficult-to-pack items, like rakes and golf clubs, and likely hazardous materials.

Here are a few tips for packing your garage efficiently.

Trash / Sell / Donate – The first step in packing your garage is to declutter. There are almost certainly things in your garage you’ve been meaning to get rid of but just never got around to it. This is your moment. Seize it. Start by creating 3 areas: one for items you that are trash, one for items you plan to sell, and an area for the stuff you want to donate. If you plan on having a garage sale to get rid of the items you plan to sell, go ahead and wipe down each item before you set it aside and put a price tag on it. This will save you time later.

Organize and Pack – After you finish the declutter process and you have your separate piles it’s time to start organizing and packing. Gather similar items together and wrap any items with sharp edges such as gardening sheers in old towels or bubble wrap. Then put these items in a heavy cardboard box or plastic bin. When it comes to power tools if you still have the original packaging repack them in that, otherwise use a cardboard box or plastic bin. Be sure to remove any detachable parts and keep everything together so nothing gets lost during the move. Fill in any empty space in the boxes with wadded up newspaper or packing paper for extra protection. Long or weirdly shaped items in your garage like rakes, brooms, and shovels, can be rolled up in a moving blanket and then secured with rope or twine.

Don’t Pack Up Tools You Might Need – As you’re packing up don’t forget to set aside tools you’ll need for packing other areas of your home and for unpacking later. Items you might need include:

  • Drill
  • Hammer
  • Tape Measure
  • Utility Knife
  • Trash Bags
  • Basic toolbox

Alternative To Consider – If all of this still sounds terrible and you just don’t want to have to pack your garage or pack anything for that matter, there’s a solution. Call us. We will show up with all the necessary packing materials and carefully wrap and box your items before safely loading and securing them in the truck. Click here for a free quote.

Tips For Moving With Pets

Moving is a stressful project in itself but add pets to the mix and well… it can turn from stressful to chaotic pretty quickly. Especially if this is your pet’s first time moving and they are well adapted to their current environment. In this article, we will talk about some tips and tricks for moving with pets that will make the transition from one home to the next easier on your furry friend.

Deciding on your new place

Always be sure to keep in mind that it’s not just you or your partner’s decision to be in a certain house/condo/apartment, you will need to keep in mind your pet. Do a thorough walk-through of the property and everything it encompasses before signing that lease. If you have a cat, pay attention to windows. What are they facing? Will the cat be entertained? You can have all the windows in the world in your new home, but if they’re all looking at brick walls, what good does that do? If you have a dog, think about space. Is there enough room for the dog to freely be themselves? Will they have an area to run around in and play or will everything be crammed together?

This is why we recommend a walk-through of the area, to help you better imagine what will become of the space when all your belongings are unloaded.

Packing your Place

The best practice you can use when moving with pets is to keep them in their favorite room for as long as possible. Whether that be the living room, office, or bedroom, keeping them in a familiar area that they enjoy is very important to a swift and easy moving experience. When doing this, be sure to introduce them to some moving boxes. Put the boxes in a visible space with them and only pack small items and don’t do it all at once. Having the cat or dog get adjusted to the idea of boxes and seeing them for an extended period of time is what we are going for.

Planning the trip

If your cat or dog isn’t acclimated to their crate or carrier, get them started. Some cats may be afraid of their carriers, which can be difficult. The best option is to have the crate in a visible place but somewhere the animal knows they can still go about their daily activities. Dogs, on the other hand, may be crate trained. If so, you don’t have too much to worry about. If not crate trained or if you don’t have a crate for the dog, just taking them on more car rides may be helpful for them to become accustomed to the upcoming trip.

Settling In

When you finally arrive at your destination, depending on the size of your new home, it may be best to introduce your pet to one room at a time. Coming to a new place can easily become overwhelming to humans, imagine being 10x smaller and being in a new place? Mind boggling. Keep doing this, if you can, gradually over the next couple of hours. Once adjusted, allow the animal free reign and see what happens.
