Custom Crating Services in Houston
Built-to-Fit Wood Crates for Fragile and High-Value Items
Our 3-Step Process
Every crating job starts with the item, not a standard template. Here is how we handle a custom crating project from first contact to completed crate.
If it is fragile, oversized, irregularly shaped, or high in value, a custom wood crate is almost always the right answer. Here are the item types we crate most frequently for Houston customers.
Canvas paintings, framed artwork, and prints require crates that account for the frame dimensions, glazing, and surface sensitivity. We build crates with interior foam lining and corner protection sized to the exact piece so nothing shifts in transit.
Antique furniture, sculptures, ceramics, and collectibles often have irregular shapes, delicate surfaces, or historical value that makes damage irreversible. Our crating crew assesses each piece individually and builds accordingly. For antique moves that go beyond crating, see our specialty movers page.
Large mirrors and glass panels are among the most commonly damaged items in a standard move. A custom wood crate with interior cushioning eliminates the risk that a mirror box cannot. We crate mirrors of all sizes including oversized and ornate framed pieces.
Large-format displays, commercial AV equipment, server hardware, and medical imaging equipment all benefit from custom crating when original packaging is not available. We build crates that provide the structural protection and vibration dampening these items require.
Precision instruments, diagnostic equipment, and laboratory hardware require protection from shock, vibration, and environmental exposure during transport. We build crates with appropriate interior suspension systems for equipment that cannot tolerate impact.
Three-dimensional pieces - bronze sculptures, ceramic works, glass art - often have no standard packaging solution. We build crates around the piece, using foam inserts cut to the contours of the item so it is fully immobilized and protected on all sides.
Heirloom furniture, designer pieces, and antique case goods that require more protection than moving blankets can provide are good candidates for crating. We crate individual furniture pieces or components for both local moves and long-distance shipping.
Machinery components, trade show displays, and commercial equipment that needs to be shipped or transported without damage. We build crates to the specifications required by the item, including fork-pockets for heavy crates that need to be lifted by equipment.
Standard packing with boxes, paper, and bubble wrap covers the vast majority of household items effectively. Crating is the right choice when one or more of the following applies.
For items that need professional packing but do not require a wood crate, see our full-service packing and unpacking page.

Custom crating is priced based on the dimensions and complexity of the item being crated, the materials required, and whether interior cushioning or suspension systems are needed. Simple crates for smaller items typically start in the $150-$300 range. Larger or more complex crates for oversized artwork, furniture, or equipment run $300-$800 or more depending on what is required. We provide a written quote after reviewing the item - contact us with dimensions and photos for an accurate figure.
Yes. Fine art, antiques, sculptures, ceramics, and collectibles are among the most common items we crate. Each piece is assessed individually and the crate is built to match the specific dimensions and fragility of the item. For antiques and high-value pieces that also need to be moved locally, our specialty movers handle the transport end.
Yes. Large-format displays, AV equipment, server hardware, medical devices, and precision instruments are all items we crate regularly. For electronics where vibration and shock are concerns, we use interior suspension or foam systems that isolate the item from the crate walls.
For a local move, a crate primarily needs to protect the item from impact and shifting during transport on our truck. For items being shipped via freight carrier or internationally, crates need to withstand more handling, stacking, and longer transit times - and may need to meet ISPM-15 heat-treated lumber standards for international shipments. We build for both and will ask about the intended use before construction begins.
Yes. For international shipments, we build crates using ISPM-15 compliant heat-treated lumber, which is required for wood packaging crossing most international borders. Let us know your destination country and shipping carrier requirements when you request a quote.
For most jobs we build the crate on-site around the item, so we do need access to the location where the item is. You do not need to be present for the entire build but we do a final check with you before sealing the crate to confirm everything is in order.
